Scouting Resumes at Tholthorpe...

25th September, 2020.

#

After lengthy preparations and stringent risk assessments Scouting is once again under way at 1st Kyle Valley, Tholthorpe Scout Group. It seems an eternity since we last met in person way back in March. We’ve had to cancel not only our weekly meetings but several camping trips, hillwalking expeditions, a day training as a mechanic with the Army and worst of all, our trip to the International Scout Centre at Kandersteg in Switzerland. It’s been very disappointing but Scouts are nothing if not resilient and adaptable and it was great to see even our youngest members, the Beavers (6 to 8 year olds) taking on board their new responsibilities and keeping each other safe whilst still managing to play games and have fun. Sadly we can’t have all the Scouts (10-14 year olds) meet at once so we have a weekly rota. However the first night was fully attended and joined by The Dawney Eagles Explorer Scout unit (14-18 years olds) from Easingwold for a camp fire chat, some hot dogs and of course toasted marshmallows...

Children from Alne Primary School have returned to school this term with dedicated Forest School sessions at Forest Quest, near Huby. “Following lockdown it was essential for us to provide valuable outdoor learning opportunities for all of the children at Alne School. Every week the children are developing their team skills, gaining self-confidence and independence but most importantly they’re enjoying their learning and having fun.” Miss Dawson, Headteache...

WOMEN’S BIG CRICKET MONTH...

25th September, 2020.

#

Easingwold Cricket Club (ECC) hosted North Yorkshire Women's & Girl's Cricket on Tuesday 1st September. The ECB and the wider game are celebrating Women's Big Cricket Month throughout September, culminating in a profile weekend on 26-27 September when England women host the West Indies, available to watch on BBC Sport and Sky Sports. The month has showcased stories in the women's game to encourage more women and girls to play, watch or attend cricket across the next 12 months. Throughout September, cricket clubs and county boards were encouraged to get involved by hosting events. The event at Easingwold included a session for 10 to 14 year olds and 15 to 18 year olds. It was a pleasure to host the girls, women and their parents and fantastic to see them in action in the sunshine at Back Lane. The future of girls cricket in North Yorkshire looks bright...

Easingwold running club...

25th September, 2020.

Continuing our running in the current climate has been at the forefront of the club’s thinking. For the past half a year (really is!), ERC has been holding monthly committee meetings via ‘Zoom’, dominated naturally by the virus pandemic. As we’ve mentioned in previous articles here in the Advertiser and on our own website, along with other clubs, ERC has kept its members fully up to date with the ongoing ‘dos and don’ts’. During the early months of lockdown, we ran individually, as part of our hour of exercise. Slowly, as new information was updated by England Athletics (guided by the Government), we were allowed to meet and run with a few people, then groups of 6 and groups of 10. Our ‘Lockdown Challenges’ were hugely popular during the sunny, hot days between April and June, and I know that all our members were grateful to the ‘Committee’ and Competition Secretary Colin Fletcher for organising what became a staple part of the ‘Lockdown’ period. Since then, our runners have been able to meet up again in small groups on Tuesdays and Thursdays...

18th September, 2020.

Easingwold Town U7’s travelled to Wilberfoss on Sunday for their first game of the season. The Easingwold team looked a little unsure for the first five minutes but they soon got into their stride. 60 minutes of football saw 22 goals scored in total with only two goals separating the sides. Easingwold U7’s train on Saturday mornings...

UNDAUNTED ...

18th September, 2020.

Undaunted by the Coronavirus Pandemic restrictions, the Churches Together in Easingwold and District (CTED) organisation assembled last Sunday afternoon for their annual joint service. We were in the open air in the Priory Gardens, where there was plenty of room for Social Distancing! And the weather was very kind! We were welcomed by Fr James Callaghan, who commented that it was nice to be able to see people’s faces! He introduced a very special guest: the well-known author and theologian Fr Henry Wansbrough from Ampleforth. We were asked not to join in the hymn: My Soul is Filled with Joy”, because of the restrictions, so this was sung solo by Kathryn Lynam from the Catholic Church. The opening prayer was led by Fr James, and Rev. Margaret Young, vicar of Easingwold, read from St Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Kathryn led the Responsory Psalm 33 and Rev. Elizabeth Cushion, from the Methodist Church, read from Luke’s Gospel. In his Homily, Fr Henry commented that one benefit of the pandemic is that we have all been brought closer together by sharing the discomfort. He noted that an apparent main difference between the Catholics and other Christian denominations is the former’s greater emphasis on the role of the Virgin Mary, highlighted in the Annunciation prayer: “Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you...

Easingwold W I ...

We’ve all been good and stayed home shielding for many months now, as we haven’t been able to meet since February, when everything came to a halt. But now we’ve all tidied our drawers, sorted out the attic, done the decorating and gardening, we were ready for a breakout! We’ve had two or three garden meet ups, with the six people allowed, and fortunately the weather has been good. Nine of us had a lovely walk, just in Easingwold, so no transport needed, then coffee, and we’re looking forward to another one soon. The amazing Jessa Liversidge came along and encouraged twelve of us to sing our hearts out in Jenny’s garden, with everything from the Carpenters and Cliff, to the more traditional and quirky with actions. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. We’ve topped it all off with replanting of the troughs outside the Town Hall this week. With plenty of watering they will soon look lovely...

Under the Willow Tree – The Community Library ...

18th September, 2020.

#

It was the turn of Jared from the Tengu Taiko drummers to be invited to hold a taiko drumming workshop under the Willow tree outside the Community library last Saturday. Jared set up 12 drumming ‘bubbles’ with 24 drummers taking part, all following the COVID-19 rules., We first learned how to hold the ‘Bachi’ sticks, before moving onto practising a few drumming strokes. We soon learned our ‘don’ from our ‘do ko’! The learner drummers ended with an incredible finale after just one hour’s tuition! Well done to the 24 people taking part. A collection was taken at the end and £60 was added to the Community library’s ‘passing it on’ fund...

Easingwold Youth Council Table Tennis ...

On the fifth of September we held an opening ceremony, and we’re really grateful to all those who came to take part in our tournament. Somebody made a very boring speech (can’t remember who), but the excitement of the tournament made up for it. We hope that everyone is able to enjoy this new facility as much as we did...

Track and Race ...

12th September, 2020.

The Access path around the field at Millfields Park has been completed. Much appreciation to a thoroughly hard working band of volunteers. The access track for walkers and runners has been widened and made circular. Over three weeks of digging, laying of weed suppressant lining, hard core transfer and raking level, applying limestone surface material and more raking, the path is complete. Peter Nottage, Chris Jackson, John Roberts and Colin Fletcher gave up their time and energy daily to make the improvements to the path...

Newton on Ouse WI ...

12th September, 2020.

#

The ladies of Newton on Ouse WI met for the second time in the local playing fields for a socially distanced gathering and a chance to catch up with old friends in lieu of our normal monthly meeting. There was a fabulous turn out with one new visitor who we hope will join us when we are able to fully restart our usual meetings. The grey clouds were looming when we set up our individual chairs and refreshments and there was a cold wind bustling around us, but thankfully, they were quickly blown away leaving us to relax and enjoy a gloriously warm afternoon with bright blue skies and sunshine! How lucky were we...

Alne Tennis Club Jubilee Cup 2020...

12th September, 2020.

#

The mixed-doubles Alne Jubilee Cup has been competed for since 1977, the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. 2020 was slightly different from usual in that there were no handshakes, kisses and hugs but a carefully socially-distanced tournament which nevertheless attracted the usual good field of entrants. Pairs (who play together throughout the afternoon) were chosen in a seeded draw so that everyone (on paper) has an equal chance of winning...
