Local London Marathon Fund Raiser...

29th October, 2021.

Some of you may recall that back in early 2020, I challenged myself to run the London Marathon for charity. I chose Barnardo's because it's a fantastic organization which supports and protects children no matter what they have been through. As the run was cancelled in London in April 2020, I instead completed it virtually alongside others from all over the world. I aimed to keep the sponsorship trickling into the charity as they, like many people and businesses, have struggled financially during the pandemic. Fast forward to 3 October 2021. Myself - and around another 47,000 runners - headed to Greenwich for the start of the 40th London Marathon and it certainly didn't disappoint. The crowd support was a truly amazing experience during the entire 26.2 mile route. As we passed our capital's iconic buildings and landmarks, the sheer volume of the crowd kept us all going. Running the final stretch past Buckingham Palace and finishing on The Mall will be an experience I will never forget.........

Wildlife and works of art abound at Easingwold Library...

29th October, 2021.

Birth & Babies The Summer Wood mural in the new Children’s library is proving popular as families and children discover the new facility. The painting is a work of art hiding animals and plants that would naturally grow in a ruined folly amongst tumbling stones. Based on the ruins at Byland Abbey and ancient oak trees at Castle Howard this picture complements our woodland theme. The established willow tree outside continues to be our library logo and the maple wood trim furniture links in nicely. The colours of the new furniture and display shelves are all included in the mural and the painted toy cupboard to create a united design.........

Birth & Babies...

29th October, 2021.

On Tuesday 19th of October, the girls of 1st Sutton on the Forest Brownie Unit were very lucky to be paid a visit by Caroline Mytum, who taught them all about the different stages of pregnancy and giving birth. The brownies learnt all about the process of labour & how a woman’s body adapts in preparation for birthing a child. They enjoyed being taught about the different stages of a baby’s development and were particularly amazed to learn that prior to being born, when they’re still in the amniotic sac, babies can taste what their mother has eaten.........

A year in the life of Linton Primary School & Nursery...

22nd October, 2021.

An 18 Month Review You would probably need to go back three generations to find an 18 month period that could roughly compare with this past 18 months. Readers will not need a re-cap of the events – they have lived them. The nation clapped for the NHS, communities showed support to education by donating computing devices to assist with home-schooling, and we at school applauded the quite wonderful, thoughtful, challenging and fun activities carried out at home by parents during lock-down. As a school, we stayed partially open throughout the whole period to serve those who needed us, including the school holiday periods during the height of the pandemic.........

On Tuesday 12th October, the girls at 1st Sutton on the Forest Brownie Unit had the pleasure of meeting Fiona, Peter and their gorgeous Guide Dogs Maisie & Nyle. Maisie, belonging to Fiona, is now retired from working but certainly enjoyed all the attention. Whereas Nyle is still an active working Guide Dog. That evening, he had just returned from Leeds where he had been assisting his owner, Peter, whilst he was at work.........

Easingwold U10s Match Report...

22nd October, 2021.

We had a great morning in Kirkbymoorside. The game was played in the spirit it should be, everyone played fairly and with a smile on their faces. The game was great to watch; goalmouth clearances, sublime volleys, great saves…the match had everything, except bad tackles. We had goals from Louis O, Rhys, Sam D, Christian and Elsie. Sam Ds mazey runs were a joy to behold, Messi style. Thankfully at this age, we don’t hand over the match ball for hat tricks, otherwise we wouldn’t have any and Rhys would have a garage full.........

Millfield Surgery Easingwold...

22nd October, 2021.

Some of you may have noticed significant changes at Millfield Surgery over the last year as our new extension and redevelopment has taken place. This has been a major project to expand, refresh and update the whole surgery which after 30 years was starting to show its age. We now have the luxury of 5 additional clinical rooms as well as the remaining consultation rooms being brought up to modern clinical standards. Elsewhere we have new administrative space and a meeting room. The reception and waiting area have been radically improved and brightened up. We are grateful to The Leaping Hare Art Gallery of Easingwold who have provided the fabulous artwork from local artists that now hang on the walls of the waiting area. This has added wonderful colour to this area. All the prints are available to buy through the gallery and for each purchase there will be a donation to EDCCA.........

Stand Up To Cancer Lunch...

15th October, 2021.

Easingwold Friends of Cancer Research UK were delighted to be back at The Hawkhills hosting their Stand up to Cancer Lunch. This has been an annual event until the pandemic. The sun shone, the dining rooms looked beautiful and the gardens very inviting. Everyone was so pleased to be there with good friends and also enjoying a delicious lunch. Stand up to Cancer raises money to fund research projects which can be translated into lifesaving clinical trials. The funds are much needed at the moment. Once again Sophie and her team at Hawkhills did us proud despite a shortage of staff. The meal and service were excellent and our appreciation also go to the chef and his team in the kitchen.........

Old Stinker...

15th October, 2021.

Last week (1&2nd October) Moon Dust Theatre (a new theatre company) put on a show with arts council funding called Old Stinker (and other curious Yorkshire tales) with participants from Easi Works the Easingwold based social enterprise for adults with disabilities. We performed it in Knaresborough at Henshaws Arts and Crafts. It was a roaring success with amazing audience feedback.........

Unseen VE Day Photos of Easingwold...

8th October, 2021.

Here we have a selection of “Box Brownie” photos taken at the top of Spring Street leading into Uppleby 8th May 1945. We even have a photo showing the Jolly Farmers pub (long gone) on Uppleby. The dressed up lorry would be making it’s way into the Market Place for the VE day celebrations. Can anyone name those pictured?.........

CHURCH COMES TO SPRINGHILL COURT!...

8th October, 2021.

Last Sunday afternoon, due to the easing of Covid restrictions, Easingwold Parish Church finally had the opportunity to bring a Harvest Festival service to the residents at Springhill Court. It was a real treat to meet so many old friends again, even though the visitors were masked! We were welcomed and the service was led by Rev’d Deacon Chris Peel. She noted that there were many signs of the harvest locally having been gathered in and that we have many blessings at this time of year: plenty to eat; wonderful autumn colours; the songs of birds ….. But we must remember those who cannot celebrate harvest: the starving; the homeless; the lonely and fearful; those around the world who struggle to survive. This reminded her of Jesus’ commission for the harvest of people: “The harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few.........

Easingwold and District u3a...

8th October, 2021.

For several years now the medium and long u3a walking groups have been organizing a few days away in the early Autumn to try out walks in different places. This year seventeen of us went to Derwent Bank, which is the hf-holiday house in Portinscale. Our holiday group leaders, Richard and Claire Scott, had been on an earlier visit to recce the walks. This meant that, for our three walking days, they were able to arrange a daily set of walks of varying distance, generally with an overlap so that we could all walk together for part of the route. They are both very thorough group walk leaders.........

HARVEST SONGS OF PRAISE!...

1st October, 2021.

We assembled last sunny Sunday afternoon by the Market Cross for a special service arranged by Churches Together in Easingwold and District (CTED), giving us the chance to sing some favourite seasonal hymns. The songs were chosen by members of the congregation, who each said a few words in introducing them. We were welcomed and an opening prayer was led by Rev. Lottie Cranfield, Associate Minister of Easingwold with Raskelf, who invited Rev. Elizabeth Cushion from the Methodist Church to introduce the first hymn: “Come You Thankful People Come”. Elizabeth highlighted as the key word here: ‘Gathered’; as well as the harvest being gathered, today was one of the first opportunities for people to gather together after the restrictions of Lockdown.........

IT’S A KNOCKOUT!...

1st October, 2021.

On Sunday 29th August, the highly anticipated pub knockout was held at Easingwold Cricket Club. With strong teams from The Angel, The Commercial, York Rugby Club and Easingwold CC it was looking like a competitive day, and it did not disappoint. The first game was a clash of the pubs. A very impressive catch from The Commercial unfortunately was not enough to beat The Angel’s performance. Next up was York Rugby Club versus non players from ECC. An amazing royal duck by Secretary Phillip Bell held back an impressive score by the Rugby Club but it was not enough to withstand the Cricket Club who managed to chase the Rugby Club down in just 3 overs.........

The Mojos rock in Easingwold Market Square...

1st October, 2021.

Last Saturday was sadly the finale of this year’s Easingwold Summer of Music and we celebrated it in style with a wonderful party band from York called The Mojos. After a few choice numbers from their friend Adam who plays with the Threatles, true to their reputation, The Mojos came on and stomped their own brilliant way through many popular upbeat songs and it was great to see so many people turn up to enjoy them. Songs from James’s “Sit down”, Van Morrison’s “Brown eyed girl”, Proclaimers “5000 miles, Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” and ending on a high with Status Quo Rocking all over the World” A few even braved the cobbles and danced! Much fun and lots of applause ensued.........
