A Bumper Harvest for the Easingwold Food Bank...

27th November, 2020.

In the absence of a Harvest Festival at Church this year, families and staff from Crayke CE Primary School collected items needed by the Easingwold Food Bank during week commencing 9 November. The school were overwhelmed by the response they received and would like to say how much they appreciate all those that donated to the appeal. Judi Jackson, Headteacher said ‘times are very tough for a lot of families right now, especially during this pandemic, and we are delighted to play our part in helping the local community’. The Easingwold Food Bank is a small independent provider of food & toiletry items to those needing temporary support in the wider Easingwold and Villages rural area. It is run and managed by Frank Johnston-Banks, who can offer people in need confidential and sympathetic support in getting them back on their feet again....

Easingwold & District U3a...

27th November, 2020.

Our Zoom meeting this month was by one of our members, Pam Crawford. Her presentation, which included amazing photographs, was entitled ‘Arctic and Antarctic Experiences’. She began with a trip to the South in their Spring. The ship travelled from Buenos Aires to the Falkland Islands, on to South Georgia, then to the Antarctic and returned to Ushuaia on the mainland. The size of ship was an important choice as only 100 people are permitted ashore from each ship at any time. In the Falkland Islands they were able to go ashore on West Point Island and Saunders Island before they went to Port Stanley. There were naturalists on board who gave talks about the flora and fauna and there was plenty of time to ask questions. They were able to see Rockhopper Penguins, Black-browed Albatross, Upland Geese, Gentoo and King Penguins, Antarctic Shags, Falklands Thrush and Striated Caracara. What an array of wonderful birds! Port Stanley is a natural harbour which still has a lot of old wrecks around the bay, including the Lady Elizabeth, which was built in Sunderland. There were still remnants from the Falklands War and many areas still wired and signed as dangerous....

Sensory room...

27th November, 2020.

So this month we opened our sensory room here at St Catherine’s nursing home, Shipton by Beningbrough. We felt it was important to the residents to open a sensory room to keep them stimulated and their minds active. To achieve this we had to create the right atmosphere. So we filled the room with lots of sensory equipment and textures, sounds of tranquil, white noise, lights of different colours, and diffusers with relaxing essential oils and fragrances to destress and unwind. It's been a huge success and used on a daily basis for both residents and staff, giving us all that peaceful place to completely unwind and enjoy....

Local boy raises money for charity...

20th November, 2020.

Rhys Throup, age 7 from Husthwaite, has manged to raise a massive £1,232.00 for the Royal British Legion, by running 11 consecutive laps of the tennis courts, for 11 days in a row. He started on the 1st November and finished 11 days later on Armistice Day, cheered on by his school. He chose to help the Royal British Legion this year as the poppy appeal could not go ahead as planned due to the current COVID restrictions. Both of his Great Grandfathers were in the forces and he wanted to give something back....

Easingwold running club...

20th November, 2020.

A message from ERC’s Chairman Mike Bishop... “Like all of us, 2020 has presented Easingwold Running Club with a unique set of challenges this year. It is well documented that sport of any kind is beneficial for both physical and mental wellbeing and since March, we have sought to keep the running club busy and active as an antidote to the restrictions placed upon us by the pandemic. As these restrictions were lifted in the Summer, we were able to return to our traditional club evenings every Thursday, albeit in smaller groups dotted around the villages and countryside of Hambleton. However, the reduction in daylight in September presented us with our biggest challenge to date as many of our usual locations became untenable from a safety point of view. Since September, we have been meeting in groups of five, with a maximum of ten people in each group. This is within the guidelines laid down for physical activity; we ensure we follow the two-metre distancing at all times, run with a trained coach and also try to keep away from members of the general public as much as possible. We do have at least three groups meeting in different locations in Easingwold, but then ensure that these groups do not come into contact with each other and they tend to run out into the country away from town. All of this is in line with the restrictions that have been set by the government and our own governing body, England Athletics....

Newton on Ouse WI...

20th November, 2020.

The ladies of Newton WI are determined not to let the current situation stop us from fulfilling the aims of the WI of coming together to learn and have fun. At our meeting this month we held our first official Zoom meeting, ably organised and run by Carol Watson. We were entertained by the very enthusiastic and lively Frances Carlaw, aka The Pearl Lady, from her beautiful gite in France! Frances has been passionate about pearls since she was a young girl and was allowed to hold her Grandma’s row of pearls. That simple gesture led to an adventure of learning and discovery for Frances, taking her to a pearl farm in China where she discovered what they were all about! We learned about the different sizes, shapes and colours of pearls, the different categories and how they are strung. We discovered that real pearls are incredibly expensive and if well looked after will increase in value. Natural pearls are in fact more expensive than diamonds and are a very rare gemstone....

Lest We Forget...

13th November, 2020.

This time of Remembrance has added to the time of abnormality caused by the pandemic. My memories extend back many years including military service and buying, selling and wearing Poppy’s but importantly it’s the remembrance parade and service that allows the local organisations and community to come together and pay their respects. This year it was quite surreal but nice to see that extra effort was made by many to ensure those who fell whilst in service of the Crown were not forgotten. Like other Groups the Scout Association usually form up for the parade in full uniform and carrying their Groups flags. Excited chatter starts the day and memories are made along the way. Meetings before the event include discussions about its meaning and importance which ensures the laying of the wreaths and lowering of the standards at the memorial is recognised as an important part of the proceedings. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts proudly carry their standards....

Easingwold Primary School Trip...

13th November, 2020.

Before half term I was lucky enough to accompany Mrs Bramma's class who went on a trip to Murton Park to experience life in the stone age first-hand. They learnt how hard they had to work to; prepare the land for sowing seeds, grinding grain for flour, making their own pots from clay and the teamwork and listening skills that went into hunting for wild animals in the forest. The children were also able to be archaeologists - looking at artefacts that had been found at pre-historic sites....

Easingwold Remembers...

11th November, 2020.

On Wednesday 11th November a good number gathered at the War Memorial in Easingwold market Place to remember the fallen of all conflicts. The vicar led the service with a Scottish Piper and bugler in attendance. Before the service started the sounds of pipes drifted throughout the Market Place calling all to the memorial. Despite the cold, a socially distanced crowd gathered to pay their respects and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice....

Local lass completes mammoth Brathay 10 in 10 challenge...

6th November, 2020.

#

Staff at Whitkirk are incredibly proud of one of their colleagues’ amazing achievement. An avid runner, Commercial Manager Becky Henry-Brown undertook a mammoth challenge last month. In her own words she writes. “ On the 23rd October 2020 I started the Brathay 10 in 10 Challenge. This involved running 10 marathons on 10 consecutive days around Lake Windermere. 262 miles in total and a daily elevation of 2,557ft. Due to Covid, the event was originally moved from May to October. It was an enormous mental and physical test to have the goalposts moved for the event, and the constant uncertainty over the likelihood of it taking place. Thankfully we avoided being caught in the 2nd lockdown ! The course on a good day is tough, but this year we had to contend with biblical weather, relentless rain, flooding, insane drivers and the aftermath of Storm Aiden and fallen trees....

Roll up! Roll Up! – Circus workshop at the Community Library...

6th November, 2020.

#

On the only fair-weather day in half term week, the Community Library held another event under the magnificent Willow Tree outside the library. Stuart from Circus Skills York, which is a non-profit Community Interest Company, turned up in a fully tailored Circus Masters uniform! The audience of children and carers were put through their paces performing various circus activities – there was never a dull moment. All those that attended enjoyed the hour and it was great to hear so much laughter. We all left with smiles on our faces. Stuart kindly took a reduced fee, so we can once again ‘past it on’ to the next arts event planned for the spring. This will be spent wisely....

Quick change of strategy...

6th November, 2020.

#

Emily Spaven, former intern at The Easingwold Advertiser, was invited to No. 10 on Thursday, 29 October to discuss economic revival with the Chancellor Rishi Sunak, MP for Richmond. Apart from initial small talk on the glories of North Yorkshire the interview was to explore economic prospects in the near future. All seemed optimistically positive on support for business being able to open up and expand with government aid and incentives. Sadly, in little more than a day it’s all old news with new analysis requiring blanket lockdown!....
