Millfield Parkrun is back!...

30th July, 2021.

On Saturday 24th July, after waiting 497 days, Millfield Parkrun (Easingwold) was finally able to restart with a new COVID-19 code of practice in place. The hot weather cooled off just in time for a total of 156 people to take part in event number 42. This is the first time we have been able to use the new paths for the event, and what a difference they made, marking out the course perfectly. Whether running, jogging or walking the paths made it so much easier underfoot than having grass sections.......

Huby & District Triples Bowls League 2021...

30th July, 2021.

Game 5 Tuesday 20th July Yet to win Huby travelled to Harome to find just 9 players available for the home side. Harome played 3 rinks with 2 players and one rink with 3. The 2 players are allowed 4 woods to their opponents 3. That meant Huby would start and finish each end, bowling 9 woods to Harome’s 8. Surely Huby would get their first win? Not a bit of it, on Rink 1 Huby led 9-6 after 10, only for the 2 from Harome to come back to take it 18-14. On Rink 2 where both had a full team Harome triumphed 15-9. Rink 3 Huby grabbed a shot on the last end to snatch a 10-10 draw against their 2 opponents. Rink 4 also went to the depleted Harome by 19-14. Great night for the home team, poor one for Huby. Final Score Harome 62 Shots 9 Points, Huby 47 Shots 1 Points.......

Easingwold Community Primary School Sculpture Week...

23rd July, 2021.

We recently completed a whole school ‘sculpture week’ at Easingwold Community Primary School. We decided on a theme of ‘fairy tales.’ We then allocated each class a fairy tale and a medium. Each class had the opportunity to explore various sculpting techniques and materials. The Early Years’ children made some excellent masks themed around some of their favourite fairy tales. We chose The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children carefully planned and designed their masks. One of the children told us, “I really liked the gems for my mask. I know how to make masks now. I’ve just made some at home as well.......

EXTRA VIEWINGS!...

23rd July, 2021.

Thanks to the kindness of Hartlepool United Reformed Church, who allowed us to keep, for a few more weeks, their tableaux using knitted figures in appropriate settings, of well-known episodes from the Bible, we were able to open Easingwold Parish Church for more viewing sessions! There were 34 little scenarios in total, telling the scripture story from the Creation through to the Resurrection. The pieces were laid out in historical order, in a one-way system, with Covid-secure measures in operation. Each was supplied with an explanatory board.......

The butterflies are getting restless!...

23rd July, 2021.

The butterflies outside Easingwold Community library are preparing to flutter away. The plan is for them to flit away during the first week of the schools returning in September. It would be so sad if they ended up in a card box in a storeroom gathering dust. It would be so great if they could still bring smiles to people during the autumn/winter months.......

NORTH YORKSHIRE CLASSIC CAR RALLY...

16th July, 2021.

It proved a great success, moving to a Market Place Start. Despite the inclement weather on Saturday 3 July, it was great to see such a good turn-out of spectators to watch the classic cars start from and later return to Easingwold Market Place. A lovely static display of old vehicles was also arranged for the afternoon, whilst the rally crews were returning from their 150 mile plus route around North Yorkshire including the Moors. They had also completed several special off-road 'tests' along the route. Eventual winners were Ali Proctor and his navigator Mark Appleton, in their 1986 Peugeot - one of the latest models eligible to enter this type of rally. Their times were slipping a little on the road regularity sections, however they made up for this on the Tests, thus taking the John Ruddock Memorial Trophy for fastest cumulative test time, as well as being overall winners.......

Easingwold Running Club...

16th July, 2021.

Races are well and truly back and like the proverbial buses they are coming thick and fast. Sunday 13th June saw club members head to the White Horse, to take part in a number races that form part of the Hardmoor Series. 4 members took part in the 10km event, with Emily Gregg finishing as the fastest female with a time of 1:06:51. Several members also completed various other distances over the weekend. Again, the club were able to boast the accolade of fastest female home, with Sam Davies completing the half marathon course in a time of 2:08:21, finishing 8th overall. Across in Burton Leonard, 21 club members were competing in the aptly named, Burton Leonard 10km, event 4 of the club championship. New to the championship rota this year, the course offered multiple challenges, ones that quite often strike fear into seasoned runners, undulation, a multi-terrain surface and a hot summers day.......

Newton on Ouse WI...

16th July, 2021.

For their July meeting, members of Newton on Ouse WI met in the car park of Linton on Ouse Village Hall. In an effort to get meetings back to as near normal as possible, we started with business; we had a short discussion about this year’s resolution – A call to increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer – and voted unanimously in favour of it. Maureen gave a report on the national Annual Meeting which was live-streamed to over 2,000 members’ homes. Five of our committee members had enjoyed listening to the 3 guest speakers, including the Countess of Wessex and Dame Cressida Dick, commissioner of the metropolitan police. The competition at our meeting was “a flower arrangement in a teacup”, and we also held a raffle. Then our president introduced our speaker, Bob from Poppleton Community Railway Nursery. Bob began by explaining that he normally gives this talk with the aid of about 100 slides, but we did not have powerpoint set up in the car park, so he just had his prompt cards to keep him on track.......

St Michael's Tollerton...

2nd July, 2021.

“Like many local Churches, the congregation of St Michael's Church in Tollerton have been conducting their services using zoom for more than a year now. Whilst individuals can see and still talk to each other using this facility, we all very much miss the warmth from meeting our friends face to face. We also miss singing together and as St Michael's prides itself on its modern music outlook (take a bow Tim Adams and Stuart Cunniffe!), we were very happy indeed as lockdown eased, to be able to return to our Church and sing the music we enjoy so much.....

We made it!...

2nd July, 2021.

After so many months without any events in person, it was such a treat for Forest of Galtres Society members to attend a real visit – and in person! A special venue was found, and visited on a reconnoitre. Then on 23rd June, various friendly ‘bubbles’ in cars took to the road for Thornton Hall Gardens. Where can the gardens be found? On the Staindrop Road, just west of Darlington. A quite wonderful place. Walled spaces amid farmland. The Hall itself standing grey and solid, with the most amazing architecture.....
