Alne WI visits Alne Brickyard ...

Saturday 23rd September, 2023

This month’s meeting for the Alne WI was open to husbands, partners and friends. As such, it was very well attended. Joan, the group’s President, warmly welcomed everyone.

Joan enthusiastically informed members of the success of the outing to Alne Brickyard (photographed) followed by tea and cake at Alne Café. She informed us of future outings available if members would like to attend.

Diana (the group’s brilliant Secretary) kept WI news brief, then followed a lively, informative, interesting talk by James Wood. James is a builder and thatcher (from Alne) on bricks, slates and land drain tiles.

He led the group through a fascinating explanation of how, after shipping Yorkshire sheep to Holland, the Dutch had sent back clay bricks as ballast. This allowed the “canny” folk of Yorkshire to source their own local clay and commence making their own bricks.
