Breadlands: the allotments of land rented to gardeners to grow food. They were so named by St John's Church, the property’s owner, and the income generated was used to make bread. These loaves of bread were then discretely given to the Easingwold poor on a Friday morning.
The Breadlands allotments were burgled on Friday, 3rd January, 2025. Every plot was broken into, leading to huge losses of equipment, as well as damage to sheds, gates, and storage. This is unfortunately not the first incident of its kind. In July 2024, hens were stolen from the allotments.
“Thieves have robbed the site regularly in my 25 years of having an allotment,” said one allotment user. “Enough is enough.”
These burglaries and vandalism have been devastating to gardeners who loved and cared for these gardens and animals. In their own way, all allotment users have been pitching in to dissuade similar incidents from occurring in the future. Present allotment trustees and gardeners have been working together to build fences, gates, and public access. Gardeners have given their time and skills to start building. Others have applied for a grant from Friends of Saint Monica’s Hospital. Work has begun.
Legally, the permissible path through Breadlands has to remain, and the public can still walk through with dogs on leads. Gates have been built to give pedestrians access. Building works will take place on Lad Carr Lane with additional security measures, such as CCTV, which is already in place. Members of the allotment hope that these added security measures will deter thefts and break-ins.
