Though the local gardening club has begun winding down for the summer season after pulling off the biannual Sutton Open Gardens, they are still up to lots of exciting outings and activities. The heavy rainfall for the Sutton Open Gardens over the late May Bank Holiday unsurprisingly meant that the attendance was down somewhat from the last open gardens held in 2022. Even so, it was a wonderful event enjoyed by all.
The club has celebrated the success of the open gardens with some exciting outings, including the Cliff Bank Nursery at the “other” Huby by the Leeds - Bradford airport. Rescued from dereliction by Ben Preston, former head gardener at Yorkgate in Leeds, the Cliff Bank Nursery is a wonderful example of enthusiasm for gardening.
Preston boasts an impressive resume at a string of top gardens across the country. He even spent a year at Great Dixter, one of the UK’s most prestigious gardens. His years of experience gave him lots of ideas and inspiration for reviving Cliff Bank. Once there, he rescued the space from six-foot tall brambles with the help of a couple of industrious pigs.
