Christmas and New Year at Millfield Parkrun ...

Saturday 6th January, 2024

Back in October, the organising team at Millfield parkrun made the decision, alongside many other parkruns in the UK, to add extra events on Christmas and New Years Day.

There were some concerns about how much work would be involved to host four events in ten days. Would there be enough volunteers to put on a safe event? How many would turn up to actually take part? Would it be a festive flop?

Reflecting upon these questions in hindsight of the events, those questions have been answered emphatically. Going into the first of the four events on 23rd December, the running events were already off to a fantastic start. There were more volunteers and participants than ever before, and the feel-good community spirit was alive and well amongst all who appeared.

The four festive runs finished the year in style. Though 23rd December may have been a dry, albeit dull, winter morning, a record number of 232 attendees completed the 5k. This was all made possible by the volunteers on the day.

Fancy dress was optional and many participants got into the Christmas spirit with Santa hats, elf costumes, reindeer antlers and patterned running leggings that looked like Christmas wrapping paper.

The goodwill continued into the cafe afterwards while the equipment was packed away, results processed, and the anticipation of Christmas buzz in the air.

Christmas day began at 8am for some of the volunteers responsible for the course set up, and shortly afterwards, the troop of participants across the park began their run.

Festive attire was everywhere, Christmas greetings a-many and the feeling of being up and out in the fresh air on Christmas morning washed over everyone.

185 people took part and shortly after 10am, Millfields was quiet once again as everyone left to continue their Christmas Day after a fantastic start that the parkrun gave on the special day.
