Easingwold was alive with the sound of Ukrainian song on Saturday, as nearly 50 singers came together to sing under the leadership of Svetlana Ryadchenko from Odessa, Ukraine as part of the Musical Bridges with Singing For All project organized by local singer and singing leader Jessa Liversidge.
Part of a series of singing workshops in different styles with the aim of bringing people together in song, this session brought together people aged 7 to 95, as well as bridging cultural and language gaps. The language was challenging at first, but Sveta soon made everyone feel comfortable and relaxed with her engaging, encouraging style and beautiful voice, full of power and emotion.
We learned several traditional Ukrainian songs, with warm-ups to suit the style, and stories behind the songs helped us put the appropriate expression and emotion into the singing. Harmonies were taught skilfully by ear and the sound created was uplifting and quite magical to hear.br>
Moved by the stunning sound of Sveta’s voice when teaching, several singers requested a solo from her, and were treated to a beautiful spontaneous vocal and piano performance – one of the many memorable moments of the session.
