This month EDCCA is celebrating its 35th anniversary, which for those who are keen on such things, the celebration or present for such an anniversary is coral and the colour is orange.

Diane Gallon, a very early committee member, kindly gave me the background to the start of EDCCA: it was in 1986 that a group of people active in the community felt that there were social needs in the locality that were not being met.

This forward-thinking group included a retired local GP, the Meals on Wheels organizer, a district nurse, a former prisoner visitor, and a volunteer working with teenagers with special needs.

To better understand the needs of the community, this group started small by undertaking a household survey and looked at ways to raise funds.

The group then split into two subgroups; one, manning a desk in Easingwold library one morning a week providing information and signposting clients in the right direction, and the other group set up a volunteer bureau.......
